Reconciliation

We used to say “I’m going to confession”. The church has adopted the name Sacrament of Reconciliation. The change of title indicates a shift in emphasis; from a focus on our sins to God’s reconciling mercy.

I have developed the enclosed Guide to Reconciliation to stress the relational aspect of sin and forgiveness in light of the story of the Good Shepherd.

The new rite of reconciliation provides many acts of contrition. I have chosen two shorter versions that are scriptural and easily remembered, especially by children.

They are posted in the confessionals.

How often should I go? The usual rule is “When conscious of grave sin”. For those who rarely avail themselves of this sacrament, I encourage participation during the seasons of repentance; Advent and Lent.
